Big City Styli

went out and got me some brand new needles for my trio of Technics. figured i would take them for a test spin and made this abstract house mixtape. to make things interesting each track selected is from a different year, spanning over three decades. abstract house survives the trends and continues to go deep.

luv455 Outside The Lines

Outside The Lines

a small sliver of jazz from the decade spanning 1947 to 1956. a time where jazz musicians started coloring outside the lines, pushing traditional forms to explore sonic terrains creating new styles and harmonic theories in the post-bop era. whether it be expanding the palette of big band or experimenting with rhythms and chord changes or just plain old jaw-dropping virtuoso playing, these cats were feeling out the new sounds. by coloring outside the lines these musicians expanded the boundaries of what jazz is and became the solid foundation for the next wave of jazz giants to build upon.

luv453 At The End Of Your Rope

At The End Of Your Rope

music, and all art in general, is a way of conveying feelings, emotions and ideas that are too complex to explain with just the basics of communication offered by language. we survive by using all our senses in tandem to help us understand and navigate our surroundings. sometimes we use our collective senses to protect us from the beasts that hunt us but other times we use the information to help those around us that are suffering. music connects people on a deeper level and reassures us that we are not alone in our thoughts and in the world. the intangible communication that comes from art provides a much needed connection. music has always been there for me when i have been at the end of my rope. i share these mixtapes in the hope that music is there for others when they are at the end of theirs.

luv452 Barry's Bonds

Barry’s Bonds

between 1962 and 1987 John Barry scored 11 movies from the James Bond canon of suspenseful spy flicks based on Ian Fleming’s novels from the fifties and sixties. even though ‘The James Bond Theme’ was originally written by Monty Norman, it is John Barry’s arrangement that is seared into our collective unconscious. having scored much of the franchise’s output over the first 3 decades (spanning 4 different actors portraying Secret Agent 007) John Barry’s work has left an indelible mark on Hollywood. this mix showcases music from all of the James Bond films John Barry scored, plus a few related extras, and loosely follows the “Bond Formula” (the general plot structure most of the movies follow).
