The Cold War

as a kid in the early eighties new wave pop music of was a fitting soundtrack to the frozen landscapes of a Canadian winter. the blend of new technologies with a post-punk attitude intensified by a reawakening of Cold War tensions altered the narrative of pop music. icy synths, effected guitars and stark drum machines reflected the societal anxiety of hurtling toward an unknown future. as a younger version of myself looked over the ice and snow, unsure of my own place in the world, this sound made sense. still does.

Trumpeter Landfrey’s story is a complicated one as it starts at the end and ends at the beginning. through this collection of late sixties odd pop psyche rock we experience Landfrey’s final days; his memories, regrets, acceptance and death. after which we witness him reborn into a world of new beginnings full of love, loss, darkness, lightness, satisfaction and finally, recognition. all to end up right where we started with Trumpeter Landfrey’s introduction.

part of the magic of rock’n’roll is absurdity. i mean it wasn’t just the pounding drums and squealing guitars that terrified the squares. it was the loud music combined with the lunatic ravings of a madman that pushed them over the edge. in that spirit here is just over 90 minutes of crazy foolishness, preposterous nonsense and stupid silly lyrical absurdities from some bona fide rock stars. a-wop-bomp-a-loo-wop-a-lomp-bam-boom!
